Extract From Elfland - Chapter 1
SOMEWHERE TO LIVE
Finnigan Elf crash landed with a bump.
The metal of the big tipper lorry, that had brought him here, was screeching and clanging shut. He
heard men shouting, then the revving of the engine, as the big tipper lorry left.
All was quiet.
And he was all by himself.
Finnigan slowly lifted his arms up and down, to see if they were broken. No, they were all right. He lifted his legs up and down. They weren't broken either, but he had lots of scratches on his legs and a sore bottom, where he had landed. Wiping the dust from his eyes, he stood up and looked around. In the distance was a sign. It said Recycle Centre. There was rubbish everywhere. Lots and lots of rubbish. It was nothing like his lovely garden.
Finnigan felt sad. For the first time in his life he was all alone and he had to think what to do. One thing for sure, he couldn't stay here, on top of the pile of rubble.
Bit by bit, flat on his tummy, he managed to slide down, off the pile of rocks, to the ground. He saw a field behind a fence, so he crawled under the fence and walked along a path to the field.
An owl hooted and he looked up to see two yellow eyes watching him.
'Hello!' hooted the owl.
'Hi!' Finnigan replied trying to sound brave.
'It's getting dark and very late for a little fellow like you to be out.'
'Yes,' Finnigan wiped his nose with the sleeve of his jacket. 'I've lost my home, Mr. Owl.'
'Lost your home,' hooted the owl. 'That is not lucky. Not lucky at all.'
'And I have nowhere to live,' Finnigan sniffed ...
